Opals' second-half surge seals China series sweep

The Opals rallied from 17 points down to defeat China 84-82, completing a clean sweep of the two-game series on home soil.

The Opals have completed a clean sweep of China, fighting back from a 17-point deficit to secure another two-point victory and finish the series unbeaten on home soil.

China looked in control after building a 14-point halftime lead and extending the margin to 17 early in the third quarter, but the Opals responded with a blistering third-term turnaround.

Head Coach Paul Gorris said the shift started with a change in approach after halftime.

"I thought our ball pressure and our defensive game plan were really good," Gorris said.

"In the first half we probably put a bit more pressure on ourselves because we weren't moving the ball, we weren't getting feet in the paint, and we were really tentative from the three-point line.

"At halftime we wanted to play with more pace, spread the floor and shoot with much more confidence. I thought our pace was slow in the first half, but once we started playing with confidence, it all stemmed from our defence."

Gorris also credited Opals veteran Cayla George's halftime address to the team.

"Cayla's never short of a word and she's always going to speak her mind, she's very passionate about the Opals and Australian basketball. " Gorris said.

"You don't get many opportunities to wear an Opals singlet and play at home in front of our home fans and we had to make the most of this opportunity.

“China weren't going to walk in here and take the game away from us."

Watching from the sidelines after announcing her pregnancy last week, George said she wanted to remind the group just how special opportunities like this are.

"Considering it’s our last home game before the World Cup team is selected and we had the 2006 Opals watching here as well, I just thought we could dig a little bit deeper," George said.

"They all bleed green and gold, but sometimes you just need a little reminder of how rare these moments are.

"I probably put a little bit of heat on it and a bit of emotion in my voice. I was pretty fired up. Eyeballs got a bit sweaty, but that's pretty standard for me," George laughed.

"China has always been a big rival for us. I pretty much just said to the girls, 'It's war.' Yes, it's a friendly game, but it's always war when we step on the court.

"All credit to the girls, they came out after the half and were amazing.”
