Australia has booked its place in the semi-finals of the FIBA U17 Women’s World Cup after holding off a determined Japan in a thrilling quarter-final contest.

Madison Ryan set the tone early, scoring seven points on a perfect 3/3 FG to help the Sapphires race to a 10-4 lead. However, the margin never got away from Japan.

The Sapphires were impressing on both ends of the floor throughout the opening half, attacking the basket and knocking down perimeter shots in a free flowing contest.

Building a 36-28 lead into halftime, Japan stayed within striking distance with their speed on the transition.

The third quarter featured an arm wrestle between the two nations, with both teams trading shots to head into the fourth quarter with everything on the line, as the Sapphires held a six point advantage, 55-49.

The fourth quarter proved to be a nail biter, with Japan cutting the deficit to just two points late in the game. Australia, however, held their nerve in the closing stages, knocking down clutch shots to seal the victory and advance to the semi-finals.

Madison Ryan led the Sapphires with 21 points, while Isabel Smith added 16 and Olivia Olechnowicz contributed 14. Matilda Trout was outstanding on the boards, finishing with nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

The win sends Australia through to the semi-finals, where the Sapphires will continue their pursuit of a FIBA U17 Women’s World Cup medal.
