The Sapphires seized momentum in a grinding fourth quarter to claim their first medal at a World Cup summit since 2018.
Just under 24 hours after falling short in an almighty battle against Spain - the Sapphires made a statement of the team’s collective resilience with the win.
Tom Garlepp successfully had the team focused and ready to compete against the Canadians in the final game of the tournament.
One of the most pleasing elements of the performance was the free-flowing offensive sets. The Sapphires played some of their best offensive basketball led by Madison Ryan who continues to show composure beyond her years.
The Victorian young gun finished with 15 points, 8 rebounds and four assists.
Olivia Olechnowicz and Isabel Smith drove fearlessly at the defence throughout the game. Both of the guards have dynamic playmaking ability and intuition when space appears on the perimeter. Olechnowicz finished with 14 points and Smith with 13.
The collective intent on rebounding was notable. Dominance in the rebound game was paired with a defensive shell that absorbed attack after attack, leading Canada to force driving lanes and put up low percentage looks.
Jemyma Manyok’s ability to run the floor and take away the paint was immense. Manyok led the team blocks for the tournament and added five more in the bronze game. Centre Matilda Trout continued to play her role well, absorbing loose balls and rebounds.
As the sun sets on the FIBA U17 World Cup in 2026 it’s ultimately been a successful week for Australian Sapphires.
The team heads home with invaluable tournament experience and there will exciting years ahead for the group as they progress towards the U19 bracket.
